Former headmaster injects creativity back into the classroom

Former school headmaster Frank Driessen is celebrating a successful launch of his creative educational consultancy business.

Frank, from West Derby, launched Creativity and Book Arts to help schools identify creative approaches to learning. Frank offers creative consultancy to schools and colleges providing training for teachers in book arts and developing cross curricular learning. Key areas of training include literacy, language, drama, music and dance.

Frank decided to become self-employed after taking retirement from his role as headmaster of St Andrews school in Maghull. He contacted Blue Orchid business support agency for help and advice on setting up.

“I had been teaching for more than 20 years and had been receiving lots of offers to provide creative educational advice,” he said. “I thoroughly enjoyed working with different people and schools offering workshops, so after retirement decided to launch the business. Coming from a teaching background I needed some advice about owning a business. I contacted Blue Orchid business support agency, which worked with me to fine tune my business plan. The advice I led me to secure a £500 start-up grant from Liverpool Vision, which I invested in marketing materials.”

Frank is currently working with Queens Park Church of England primary school in Prescott and St Thomas Church of England Primary School in Lydiate and plans to grow his firm.

“I love what I do and I want the schools I work with to enjoy the extra creativity I can bring,” he said. “I would like to expand my services to community and religious groups as well as schools. I am currently working with the Anglican cathedral to begin planning for an Easter book art session and see this as a growth area for my services. I would encourage any would be business owners to contact Blue Orchid. It provides clear, concise and relevant information which has allowed me to do what I love.”

Frank’s support was delivered though the ISUS programme, which is provided by the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) and delivered by Blue Orchid in Liverpool City Centre. ISUS is part of Solutions for Business, the Government's package of publicly funded business support designed to help companies start and grow. The programme is funded by the NWDA, European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), and backed by Liverpool Council.
