Deaf Education Advocacy Fellowship
Esmail Patel has never once let his deafness stand in his way of seizing opportunities.
After graduating from the University of Central Lancashire in 2006 with a degree in business information systems, criminology and career management, he began actively trying to open up more doors for other deaf people.
But Esmail, who was born deaf, wanted to go further and Blue Orchid responded to his appeal for help.
Blue Orchid helped him to secure funding so that he could run and market his own business, DEAF - a community interest group.
DEAF provides an advocacy service for deaf and disabled people by signposting them towards education and employment opportunities.
It also provides training, lectures, advice and workshops to show deaf people, especially those from ethnic minorities, what they too can do to get a job, improve their education or start their own business.
It also provides a one-stop advice shop - whenever it is needed - for parents with deaf children.
"By building self confidence and encouraging a positive attitude, individuals can develop their ideas and achieve their personal goals," he said.
Esmail, who also currently works as a youth worker, was awarded a Diversity Award from Greater Manchester Police earlier this year in recognition of his work.
Although he currently works alone, he hopes to recruit members of staff later this year.
